Maybe you know it.
The goal is to remove 3/4 of stomach.
It can seem to be a very violent way of losing weight, but for some persons, who fight during all their life against their own body, doing each kind of diet, it became the last solution.
My mother had this surgery 8 months ago and she's got a new life, now !
My sister is 30 years old, she's got the life in front of her and she can't just stand it anymore.
I'm supporting her in her choice.
Because I know how much her weight hurts her.
But I'm scared. Because I was 11 years old when she came into this crazy world, and she is my first baby. And she'll always be.
But, as we're crazy people, we decided to celebrate her old body, making a diner together with my two other sisters !
Because, after this surgery, the appetite is really REALLY low !
My mother who used to eat and drink as a "bon vivant" before, came to... "eat" at home, 15 days after her operation...
She told me : "Don't worry, I take my food with me".
She came with 2 tiny tiny boxes ! One with a tablespoon of minced ham and one tablespoon of carrot purée !
She ate that and tapped her belly, saying : "Whoo ! I'm not hungry anymore !"
... whoo... Oooookaaay ! You know how much food is important for frenchmen ??! Such a difference !
So, yesterday, my oldest sister prepared lasagna, my second one took salami and a bottle of rosé, my youngest prepared aperitifs, and I baked a strawberry cake.
As a lot of people, I love strawberries ! But I always hesitate to bake them. First, because it's expensive, I don't want to waste them into a bad or difficult cake.
Second, because strawberry cakes are usually hard or long to make. I would LOVE to prepare a "fraisier" (strawberry gateau), for example. But it seems to be soooooo long and difficult.
Then I found this recipe and it's been a good alternative to make a tasty strawberry cake. Follow me !
Here what you'll need for a 4 person's cake :
- 250 gramme sof strawberries.
- 150 grammes of flour
- 120 grammes of brown sugar
- 100 gramme sof melted unsalted butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 6 cl of milk
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon of rum.
Your oven must be preheated at 180°C (350°F / Th 6).
Step 1 :
... Pour all the ingredients (except strawberries) together in a large bowl !
You can see my legs on the reflection !! ... I really must have a photographer training, one day !!
Don't complain ! I'm dressed !! It could have been worst !!
And whisk all that !
Step 2 :
Pour your mixture in a buttered and floured dish.
... And the other side of my kitchen !! Almost cleaned, fortunately ...
Step 3 :
Then, rinse and cut your fruits in 2 pieces and arrange them into the pastry.
Step 4 :
In the oven for 20 minutes. Then, cover it with a aluminum sheet and let it for 13 minutes more... yes, I know... 13 minutes ... Not 10, not 15 ... Sorry, but this is the real time for my oven !
That's it ! Let it cool totally and eat it with crème chantilly.
Bon appétit !

Dear Axelle, Your sister will be in our prayers. We hope that the surgery will help her have the quality of life she wants. I am not able to eat strawberries anymore, but the cake base sounds yummy all by itself. I may have to try it and add a different fruit. All of your recipes teach me something new, so thank you very much. love and prayers, jep
ReplyDeleteDear Jep, thank you for your comment, once again.
DeleteIf you can't eat strawberries anymore (are you allergic ?), I suppose, yes, you can do it with another fruits. I think juicy fruits would be better. Tell me if you try it :)
Not allergic, it is those little seeds that get me now. I like strawberries, but don't miss them like I would other fruits. I think I would try the cake with fresh peaches, but it is too hot here right now to bake anything. ;-) I will try to save some peaches in the freezer for baking it when the weather is cooler. jep
DeleteOK, I understand better.
DeleteIt's hot, over there ? You're lucky ! Here, we've got 2 days hot, 2 days rain and cold !! :D
Dear Axelle-Your sister will be in our prayers, too. We echo the sentiments of jep.
ReplyDeleteYour recipe is very timely, as usual. Guests will be here for Saturday evening and strawberry shortcake was on the menu. WAS on the menu. We will be having Strawberry Cake for My Sister, instead. With whipped cream. I will remember your sister. Best wishes for her speedy recovery.
I hesitate to cook strawberries for the same reason. Strawberry rhubarb pie is very popular in the U.S.A.. A waste of strawberries. This will be the second year for me making rhubarb wine. The best way to enjoy rhubarb!
Regards-Jamie
Dear Jamie, Thank you too for your support :) I hope you, your family and your guests will like it. This is a very simple cake, you know. I mean, I'm not sure you could amaze them ;D But for sure, they'll taste a familial cake ! For strawberries and rhubarb, I never ate rhubarb ! I don' even know how it tastes ! I don't EVEN KNOW where I could find it in France ! For sure, my little farmer doesn't have it. But RHUBARB WINE sounds divinely for me !! :D Could you give me the recipe ?
DeleteDear Axelle-The cake was delicious! I served it not with chantilly creme but with homemade peppermint icecream. A surprisingly tasty combination.
DeleteRhubarb wine: cut 5lbs. of rhubarb in 1in. pieces. Then pour 1gal. boiling water and let stand 3 or 4 days. Strain. Add 3 1/2 lbs. brown sugar, 5 oranges, 5 lemons, 1c raisins. Let stand 3 or 4 days. Strain through a cloth. Let stand as long as it is 'working'. Don't cork tightly until a few months after it has stopped 'working'. Then bottle. The longer you let it rest in the bottle the tastier it will be. You should of course sample it the first time through at various phases, and then pour your first real glass after a year of mellowing out in the bottle. Regards-Jamie
Thank you for this wine, Jamie. If one day, I find rhubarb, this is this recipe I'll make !
DeleteHi Axelle,
ReplyDeleteI hope your sister will have a smooth and speedy recovery.
Your strawberry cake looks wonderful. Looks especially delicious eaten with the chantilly cream!
Thank you very much, Joyce for your comment.
DeleteIt was a good cake, maybe not the best one in the world, but good enough to eat it with delight !! :D
